About Glimpses Of God

Glimpses of God seeks God through all the wondrous things He has created, through His words found in the Old and New Testaments.

Glimpses of God is an endeavor of Mary Doan, who is neither theologian nor church minister. She simply seeks to share her thoughts, her questions, her beliefs about God. She began hearing Bible stories in a country Baptist church Sunday school when a young girl. Throughout her 90+ years, her belief in God has only been strengthened. And while her faith in God has never been shaken, several years back she began to question the direction of church leadership that often seemed driven by money, membership growth, and politics.

That said, Glimpses of God is not an attack on churches. This writer hopes, prays, that mothers and fathers continue to take their children to the places that worship God. We adults often remember the Bible stories we heard in Sunday School when we were children. We also need to heed that not all of our religious leaders are true messengers of God. We must never forget that God gave us a mind. The high probability is: He expects us to use it.

Glimpses of God contains much scripture. Historical background information from various sources is provided. The historical information provided is not an endorsement of that information, as Bible scholars often disagree. The information, however, does give insight into happenings in ancient times.

BRIEF BIO

Mary Doan is retired. In the last 20+ years of her working life, she was a newspaper reporter, columnist, then editor.

After high school Mary enlisted in the Women’s Army Corps, and was a cryptographic technician in the Army’s code room at the Pentagon.

While in the service, she married. Her husband Jerry was in the Air Force, and had recently re-enlisted. Mary made the choice to leave the service, and worked briefly at the National Academy of Sciences in Washington, D.C.

Her husband was frequently transferred. So Mary worked at various jobs.

After her husband left the service, both she and her husband worked at Cape Canaveral (Cape Kennedy) during the early 1960s. Mary was at the Cape when John Glenn made his first flight.

In the mid-60s, she and her husband made the switch to self-employment, and they owned and operated a restaurant for 20+ years. They were blessed with three daughters, four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Her husband and two of her daughters have passed.

Now in her 90s, Mary lives in St. Augustine, Florida.

Thoughts About God

I cannot prove God exists,
And none can prove God is not.
I, too, have asked what others often ask:
Who is He? What if He is not?

I touch a tender blade of grass
And wonder how it came to be.
I delight in the changing seasons,
And feel the wind I cannot see.

I treasure each lovely sunrise,
Stand in awe of evening sunsets.
I gaze at countless glittering stars,
And ponder the universe that never ends.

I marvel at the miracle of birth,
The loving trust of a child.
So special this love that gently tended,
Just grows, and grows, and grows.

I, too, have asked,
If God is so powerful
Why didn’t He make us all good?
Why does evil often prevail?

Yet, deep inside, I know a loving God
Made us human, not puppets on a string.
The choice of good and evil
He put entirely in our hands.

We need only to look
At our children to see,
It is when they choose the good,
Both they and we are pleased.

I will not believe that God is not,
I will not believe we have no soul,
I will not believe that when we die,
There is only darkness and nothing more.

I will not believe
There is no justice
For the many who suffered
Through no fault of their own.

I believe when life on Earth is over,
And our bodies return to dust,
Our souls will join God, our Creator,
And live forever in Spiritual realm.

While the life we live here and now
Opens the door to many choices,
The greatest choice we’ll ever make
Is to love God and our fellow man.

For it is love that frees us to be with God
And loved ones who await
In a promised place called Heaven
And a time called eternity.

In the presence of our Lord,
We will learn a new song of joy.
There will be no pain, no sorrow,
No death, no parting evermore.
